Checking engine oil

Engine oil is an especially important component of your vehicle's internal lubrication system. It keeps moving parts inside the engine that are critical to the combustion process moving freely with minimal friction at maximum efficiency. It also helps reduce the risk that these moving parts will be damaged over time. So what happens if you don't get your oil changed? Though nothing may seem to occur at first, you could be causing your car serious damage while driving around Santa Cruz. Find out if it's time for an oil change with our expert Subaru service technicians.

What Does Engine Oil Do?

Engine oil, or as it's sometimes called, motor oil, keeps the parts of your SUBARU BOXER® engine from rubbing together and causing friction-induced damage. More precisely, oil has the following roles for Capitola cars:

  • Oil decreases wear and tear on moving parts due to friction.
  • Motor oil with dispersants is specifically proven to clean sludge from the engine.
  • Detergents in motor oil help clean varnish from engine parts.
  • When changed regularly, motor oil can help neutralize acids that form from fuels, improve piston ring seals, and cool the engine by moving heat away.

What Happens to Engine Oil Over Time?

As it's used up over the period of its useful life, motor oil starts to become much less effective. -- What's more, it starts to pick up debris that causes friction. As friction increases, things get too hot. So if you were wondering "what happens if you don't get your oil changed?" this is what happens: things get too hot and serious engine damage begins. How Do I Change the Oil in My Subaru?

Looking to conduct a DIY oil change near Apatos or Watsonville? The first important step is to consult your Subaru's owner's manual to see what type of oil your vehicle requires. Once you have your oil, follow the steps below:

  1. Jack your car up using jack stands or steel ramps.
  2. Find the oil drain plug on the bottom of your oil pan (this will be under the engine). Put an oil basin underneath, and unscrew the plug to drain all the old oil out. This might take 15 minutes. Replace the plug when finished.
  3. Find your oil filter, and remove it with an oil filter wrench. Keep the basin underneath it as you do this as excess old oil may spill out.
  4. Grab your new filter, and make sure to rub a bit of oil around the rubber seal - this ensures your filter is watertight and is an extremely important step.
  5. Set the new filter in place, then tighten it by hand
  6. Once you've completed the above steps, it's time to take off your oil cap and put new oil in.. Pour in the specified amount of new oil, which you can find in your owner's manual. Then replace the oil cap.
  7. Check the engine oil level with the dipstick. If you're still low, you may add another ounce and check the level again. Once you get a proper oil level reading, you're good to go!
