Subaru Prepare Your Vehicle for the Winter

Subaru Winter Prep in Santa Cruz

Every year after the summer heat wears off and the skies start to fill with clouds and fog, winter starts to signal its arrival on the California coast. And, depending on the year and what's been happening far out in the Pacific, some years get more of a drenching than others with the El Nino/La Nina effect. For folks in the Santa Cruz area, that translates into rain, fog, wind, and generally a lot of wet roads with occasional mud, wildlife, and all sorts of inclement driving. While Subarus are well-noted for their ability to drive in hard terrain as well as with four-wheel drive, that doesn't mean one has to take the horse trail every time one goes out for a drive in winter.

Winter Car Care Before the Cold Season Sets In

The cold in California, fortunately, doesn't get as bad as the Dakotas, but that doesn't mean your Subaru should be ignored. Basic and simple preparation can go a long way in improving your car's reliability with basic support features that matter a whole lot on a cold night or when out on a remote road. Here are the basic things every car winter prep should cover when getting your Subaru ready for winter:

  • If your tires have seen some life already and you expect to be using them on wet roads or snow, change them out with a new set. The new tread will give you a tremendous improvement in traction, control, and safety on the road as part of your holiday travel preparation.
  • Check and inflate the tire pressure. Tires tend to lose air when the outside temperature gets cold. Inflating your tires offsets this problem.
  • Replace the engine oil and antifreeze with new fluids. By ensuring the engine lubrication and coolant are in top shape, problems associated with old fluid are eliminated before they become an issue.
  • Test and replace the car battery if needed. By ensuring your car battery is running at its optimum level, your car will function and start from cold reliably versus dying out and being stuck waiting for help.
  • Test the heater system for internal comfort and personal temperature protection.
  • Replace the windshield wipers so that the ability to clear the window is functional and practical versus just smearing a visual mess across the driver's view range.
