What Does “Subaru” Mean?
The English equivalent of the Japanese term “Subaru” is the star constellation “Pleiades.” The Pleiades star cluster was formed sometime within the last 100 million years, and consists of several stars including the famous “seven sisters”: Sterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Alcyone.
Subaru, the automotive company, is a subsidiary of FujiHeavy Industries (FHI for short). Subaru took on its name as an allusion to the five companies that merged to create FHI upon its inception. The word “subaru” can also refer to the term “united.”

What’s interesting about the Pleiades, AKA “Subaru,” is that it’s been referred to as the “Seven Sisters,” “Seven Maidens,” or “Seven Little Girls” by a variety of different cultures. Since these cultures have been separated both by time and geography, this similarity gives the constellation a cosmic mystery and awe.
